How to Apply to Colleges Last Minute (and Still Do It Well!)

Written by Amanda, University of Pennsylvania

So, you’ve decided to apply to a few more colleges at the last minute! Whether inspiration struck late or plans changed, applying late doesn’t mean you have to rush into chaos. With a bit of strategy and focus, you can still submit strong applications, even under tight deadlines! Here’s how:

1. Choose Your Schools Wisely

You don’t have time to apply everywhere, so focus on three types of schools:

Safety Schools: These are colleges where your grades and test scores are higher than the average of what they usually accept.

Target Schools: These are schools where your academic stats match the average student they admit.

Reach Schools: These are harder to get into, but still worth a shot if you’re truly excited about them.

Tip: Look for colleges with rolling admissions (they accept applications until they fill their spots) or schools with late deadlines.

2. Research Quickly but Focus on What Matters

When looking at schools, don’t get too stuck in the details! Focus on:

● Application requirements (i.e., essays, test scores, and recommendation letters).

● Deadlines for both the application and financial aid.

● Programs that interest you (i.e., what you want to major in).

You don’t need to know everything about the school, just enough to show you’re interested!

3. Work Smarter, Not Harder

Even if you’re in a rush, do your best to make your application strong:

Essays: Refer to essays you’ve already written, but tweak them to match each school’s prompt. Make sure your essay answers the question and shows why you’re a good fit!

Activities and Awards: List your most important activities and accomplishments. Keep it short and focused; no need to include every little thing!

Recommendation Letters: If you need them, ask teachers or counselors who already know you well. Be polite about the short deadline and thank them for helping you!

4. Use Tools to Save Time

Common App or Coalition App: These let you apply to multiple schools at once.

Templates: Use the same essay format for different schools, but adjust it slightly to fit each one.

Make sure to proofread everything before you hit submit!

5. Don’t Forget Financial Aid

Even if you’re applying late, you can still get financial help!

● Fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible to qualify for aid.

● Check if the school offers scholarships or grants for late applicants.

6. Stay Calm and Organized

Applying last minute can feel stressful, but you can handle it!

● Write down the deadlines and what each school needs.

● Break big tasks (like writing essays) into smaller steps so they feel less overwhelming.

● If you have questions, call or email the admissions office; they want to help you succeed!

7. Be Realistic but Positive

Some schools might already be full, so be sure to include safety schools or schools with rolling admissions. This will give you a better chance of getting in somewhere you’ll love!

The Bottom Line

Applying to college at the last minute isn’t ideal, but you can still make it work! Stay focused, do your best, and submit applications that show off the real you.

Good luck; you got this!
