How to Beat Application Burnout and Still Enjoy Your Winter Break
Written by Amanda, University of Pennsylvania
Winter break should feel like a gift; a time to relax, celebrate holidays, and spend quality time with loved ones! However you celebrate during your break, this season is for rest and connection. But for high school seniors, it can also feel like a marathon of college applications.
The good news? You can balance productivity with relaxation and truly make the most of your break! Here’s how to tackle your application tasks while still enjoying the holiday season.
What Is Burnout, and Why Does It Happen During Break?
Burnout happens when stress builds up and leaves you feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and unmotivated. It can make even simple tasks, like editing an essay, feel impossible. Winter break is a common time for burnout because you’re juggling two big goals:
1. Finishing college applications.
2. Trying to relax and enjoy the holiday season.
The trick is finding a balance so you can work effectively without feeling drained!
Tips to Beat Burnout and Stay on Track
1. Create a Schedule (and Stick to It!)
It’s easy to fall into the trap of working nonstop or putting everything off until the last minute, but neither approach will set you up for success. Instead, create a schedule that balances productivity with downtime:
● Set work hours: For example, 10 a.m. to noon for applications.
● Protect your free time: Use the rest of your day for relaxing, celebrating, or spending time with family and friends.
A clear plan keeps you focused without overworking, and crossing tasks off a to-do list feels great!
2. Know What to Prioritize
Not all tasks are created equal! Tackle the most important items first, like essays for schools with early January deadlines. Save smaller tasks, like double-checking grammar, for later. Here’s how to organize your to-do list:
● First: Big deadlines (e.g., essays, recommendation requests).
● Next: Reviewing your Common App or application forms.
● Last: Final touches like spelling and formatting checks.
Starting with priorities will help you feel in control and reduce last-minute panic!
3. Take Breaks; They’re Good for You!
Taking breaks might feel counterproductive, but they actually boost focus and productivity! Try these methods:
● Pomodoro Technique: Work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Repeat.
● Longer breaks: After finishing a major task, step away for an hour or two to recharge.
Use your breaks to do things you love, like baking, listening to music, or watching your favorite holiday movie!
4. Take Care of Yourself
Self-care isn’t just a buzzword, it’s the fuel that keeps you going! Prioritize these basics:
● Get enough sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours a night for better focus and energy.
● Eat nourishing meals: Healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, or yogurt can keep your energy up.
● Move your body: A walk, quick stretch, or dance session can lower stress.
● Have fun: Spend time with friends, read, try a creative hobby, or take part in anything else you feel can help you destress and enjoy your break!
5. Ask for Help When You Need It
No one expects you to handle everything on your own! If you’re feeling stuck, reach out to:
● Family members: They can help keep you on track or provide emotional support.
● Teachers or counselors: They’re there to give feedback on essays or answer application questions.
● Friends: Share your experiences with others who understand.
Sometimes, just talking things out can help you refocus!
How to Actually Enjoy Your Break:
Set “No-Work” Zones
Pick a few days where you don’t work on applications at all. For example:
● Take the evenings of your respective holiday off entirely.
● Plan a “fun-only” weekend to recharge.
Knowing you’ve set aside downtime will help you stay motivated during work sessions!
Celebrate Small Wins
Finished an essay? Submitted an application? Celebrate it!
● Treat yourself to something you enjoy, like hot cocoa or a favorite activity.
● Reflect on your progress; it’ll keep you feeling positive!
Why It’s Worth It
Burnout isn’t just tiring; it can make your work harder and less enjoyable. By staying organized, caring for yourself, and carving out time for what matters most, you can finish your applications and have an incredible winter break.
