Columbia University drops SAT/ACT requirement, first among the Ivies.

Columbia University has announced that it will permanently become test-optional for all applicants, making it the first Ivy League school to do so. Under this new policy, applicants will no longer be required to send SAT or ACT scores.

In a statement, Columbia Undergraduate Admissions explained that the change is designed to provide the greatest possible opportunity and flexibility for students to showcase their academic talents, interests, and goals. Standardized testing will not be a required component of their application.

The university's review process is designed to respect varied backgrounds, voices, and experiences to determine an applicant's suitability for admission and ability to thrive in the curriculum and community, as well as to advance access to educational opportunities. Other Ivy League universities have implemented similar policies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Columbia previously implemented a temporary test-optional policy for the 2020-2021 school year and has now extended the policy permanently.
