How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself" in a College Interview

Written by Amanda, University of Pennsylvania

The "Tell me about yourself" question is often the first question you'll encounter in a college interview. It’s an open-ended opportunity to set the tone for the rest of the conversation, and it can feel a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry; it’s just a way for them to get to know you better. Here are some tips to help you craft a thoughtful and engaging response!

1. Keep it Short, but Meaningful

While it might be tempting to launch into your life story, remember that this is only the beginning of the interview. Instead, keep your answer short, about 1-2 minutes, and leave room for more specific questions later on that may pertain to more of your background.

Example: "I'm a high school senior who loves solving problems, whether it’s in a math class or while working on my school's robotics team. I’m passionate about environmental sustainability and have started a recycling initiative at my school. Outside of academics, I enjoy playing the piano and volunteering at a local animal shelter."

2. Highlight Your Strengths and Passions

This question is your chance to introduce yourself in a way that highlights what you’re passionate about. Focus on your strengths, activities, passion projects, or any other interests that showcase your unique personality and what you can bring to the campus community.

Tip: Focus on 2-3 things that are important to you. These could be activities you enjoy, leadership roles you’ve taken, or things you’ve learned. If you have a project outside of school, such as a YouTube channel, a Twitch stream, or a blog, that you’re passionate about, feel free to share that too. This will help you stand out and show initiative!

Example: "I’ve always loved writing, which is why I’ve been part of my school’s newspaper for the past three years. This year, I’m the editor-in-chief, and I lead a team of writers to create stories that matter to our student body. I also run a YouTube channel where I talk about my favorite books and review new releases."

3. Connect to the College

While this question is focused on you, it’s also an opportunity to connect your personal story to the college. Briefly mention why you’re excited about the school and how your interests align with what the college offers.

Example: "As someone passionate about science and research, I’m excited about the opportunities at [College Name] to work in the state-of-the-art biology labs. I’ve been reading about the ongoing research in genetics, and I’d love to be part of a school that fosters student-led initiatives in these areas."

4. Show Personality and Authenticity

Don’t be too formal when answering this question. Just be you! The interviewer wants to know the real you, so it’s great to show a bit of your personality.

Tip: Share a fun or unique fact about yourself to stand out.

Example: "When I’m not in school or working on my extracurriculars, I’m an avid baker. I love experimenting with new recipes, and my family jokes that our kitchen has turned into a science lab. It’s a fun way for me to unwind and challenge myself creatively."

5. Don’t Repeat Your Resume

The interviewer already knows about your grades and activities from your application, so don’t just list everything again. Focus on a few important experiences that show who you are beyond academics.

Example: "One of the most important experiences I’ve had was leading a community project to build a garden for a local elementary school. It taught me how to work with a team and showed me how small actions can make a big difference."

6. Prepare, But Don’t Sound Rehearsed

It’s a good idea to practice your answer, but don’t memorize it word for word. You want to sound natural and relaxed, not like you’re reading a script. Practicing helps you feel more confident!

Final Thoughts

"Tell me about yourself" is your chance to share who you really are with the interviewer. Keep your answer short, talk about what you care about, and connect it to the college you’re applying to. Most importantly, be genuine and let your personality shine! By using these tips, you’ll be able to create a great answer that leaves a strong impression. You got this!
