How to Answer the "Why This School?" Question in a College Interview
Written by Amanda, University of Pennsylvania
As you prepare for college interviews, one question is almost guaranteed: "Why this school?" It might seem straightforward, but it’s crucial to answer this question thoughtfully. Interviewers want to know if you’ve done your research and are genuinely interested in what their school offers. Here’s how to tackle this question and impress your interviewer!
1. Do Your Research
Before the interview, take the time to learn about the school’s academic programs, campus culture, extracurricular activities, and unique opportunities. You should be able to explain what specifically drew you to this college. Consider these elements:
● Majors and academic strengths: Is there a particular program or major that aligns with your goals?
● Faculty: Are there professors whose work you admire or research opportunities you’re excited about?
● Campus culture: Does the school’s student community and values align with what you’re looking for?
● Opportunities: Are there specific clubs, internships, or study abroad programs you’d love to be part of?
Tip: Instead of saying, “I want to go here because it’s a top school,” try something such as, “I’m interested in your school’s creative writing program, especially the chance to work with professors like Dr. Jones, whose novels I’ve read and admired. I can really see myself growing as a writer here.” The more specific you can be, the better!
2. Personalize Your Answer
Relating your personal experiences and goals to the opportunities at the college makes your answer memorable. Think about how the school fits into your future plans. For example, if you’re passionate about environmental science, mention how the school’s sustainability initiatives or environmental research labs will help you achieve your goals. If you’ve visited the campus, talk about how your experience made you even more excited to apply.
Example: "I’m really excited about your school’s interdisciplinary approach to education. As someone who’s interested in both economics and political science, I’m drawn to the flexibility of your curriculum and the opportunities to work with professors like Dr. Smith, whose work on global policy aligns with my career goals."
3. Tie It Back to Your Values
Colleges care about more than just academics; they want to know how you’ll fit into their community. Think about what’s important to you, like teamwork, creativity, or diversity, and explain how the school matches those values.
Example: "One of the things that excites me about your school is the strong sense of community and collaboration. As someone who loves working in teams, I’m looking forward to
joining the Entrepreneurship Club, where I can collaborate with like-minded students on real-world projects."
4. Connect Your Goals with the School’s Mission
If the college has a mission that speaks to you, mention it! Many schools are proud of their unique approach to education, so if their mission aligns with your goals, bring that up.
Example: "I admire your school’s commitment to social justice and community service. Volunteering has always been an important part of my life, and I’m excited about the chance to get involved with your Service Learning Program to continue making an impact."
5. Avoid Clichés
The interviewer has likely heard dozens of students say, "I’ve wanted to go here since I was little" or "This school has a beautiful campus." Although those points may be valid, they won't set you apart.
What NOT to say: “I love this school because it has a great reputation.”
Example of what to say instead: “I’m drawn to the interdisciplinary approach your school offers, especially the way I can combine my interests in computer science and art. I haven’t seen that kind of flexibility anywhere else.”
6. Be Honest and Enthusiastic
At the end of the day, authenticity and enthusiasm matter! Don’t just say what you think the interviewer wants to hear. If you’re genuinely excited about the school, that will shine through. Show your enthusiasm and explain why you think you’d be a great fit.
Example: “I’ve been excited about your school ever since I learned about the student-run theater program. I love acting and directing, and I can’t wait to get involved in such a hands-on, creative environment.”
By preparing and personalizing your answer to the "Why this school?" question, you’ll be able to stand out in your college interview. It shows you’ve taken the time to understand the school and can envision yourself thriving there, a key factor that admissions officers want to see. Just remember: be specific, stay away from clichés, and let your excitement shine through! You got this!
