Change Your Interests? Here’s How to Connect Unrelated Activities to Your Intended Major in College Essays (STEM to Humanities, Humanities to STEM, and More)


An Ivy Institute counselor’s reflection on a recent student conversation about changing academic interests, building a coherent application narrative, and explaining how seemingly unrelated experiences led to a new intended major.


A student recently reached out to The Ivy Institute with a concern that had begun to affect how the student viewed the entire college application.

The student wanted to apply as a history major.

There was one problem—or at least something the student had begun interpreting as a problem.

Nearly every major extracurricular activity on the application involved STEM.

The student had joined STEM clubs, competed in STEM-related events, and invested meaningful time in technical activities. At the same time, the student had completed every history course available at the high school and had developed a genuine desire to continue studying history in college.

The student was particularly concerned about applying to University of California campuses.

The central question was not merely whether a history major could have STEM activities. The deeper concern was whether admissions readers would believe the intended academic interest.

Would the application appear inconsistent?

Would the student look indecisive?

Would admissions officers assume that history had been selected at the last minute?

Would the STEM activities make the stated interest in the humanities seem less authentic?

The student wanted to know how to “frame” the application.

We thought the question deserved a much fuller response because it reflects one of the most common misconceptions in selective college admissions: the belief that a student’s entire high school experience must point neatly and consistently toward one intended major.

According to this imagined standard, a future historian should spend four years participating only in history-related activities. A future engineer should have a résumé filled with robotics, coding, mathematics competitions, and research. A future writer should have literary magazines, journalism, poetry awards, and publications. A future physician should have hospital volunteering, biology research, health advocacy, and science competitions.

Real people rarely develop that neatly.

Interests change.

Experiences redirect us.

A class unexpectedly becomes important.

An activity that looked exciting from a distance becomes deeply disappointing once we actually try it.

A student who once believed that engineering was the obvious future may discover that the most compelling questions were not about how a system worked, but about who built it, why it developed, whom it benefited, and how it changed society.

Another student may spend years reading, writing, debating, and studying history before realizing that the questions they care about cannot be answered through interpretation alone. They may become fascinated by computation, environmental science, biomedical engineering, statistics, or another technical discipline that gives them new tools for investigating those questions.

Neither student has failed to create a coherent application.

Neither student needs to erase the past.

The application simply needs to help the reader follow the thread.

Our first response: Your extracurricular activities do not all have to match your intended major

The first point we emphasized was direct:

Colleges do not expect every extracurricular activity to match the major a student selects on the application.

The student’s STEM involvement was not automatically a weakness in a history application.

Those activities represented real experiences, commitments, skills, relationships, and discoveries. They did not become irrelevant because the student’s current academic direction had changed.

The student had also taken every history course available at the high school. That was already important evidence of genuine interest.

Course selection matters.

When a student repeatedly chooses the most advanced or extensive coursework available in a subject, the transcript begins to show a pattern. The activity list is not the only place where academic interests appear.

The student did not need to transform the STEM activities into fake history experiences. The student also did not need to apologize for having pursued them.

The stronger strategy was to explain how the student arrived at the current interest.

That is the part students frequently overlook.

They become so worried about whether the current destination matches the earlier activities that they fail to describe the journey between them.

The real goal is not perfect alignment—it is understandable development

A coherent college application does not require every line of the résumé to carry the same label.

Coherence means that the reader can understand:

  • What the student pursued

  • Why the student initially pursued it

  • What the student learned

  • What changed

  • Which questions or experiences became more meaningful

  • Why the student now wants to move in a particular academic direction

The student’s activities do not have to form a perfectly straight line.

They should form a traceable line.

There is an important difference.

A perfectly straight line suggests that the student knew at fourteen years old exactly what field would define the rest of life and then spent every year constructing an application around that answer.

That may be true for a small number of students.

For many others, high school is the period during which they are trying to discover the answer.

They join activities because a friend invited them.

They take a course because it fit the schedule.

They enter a competition because a teacher encouraged them.

They continue something because they are talented at it, even before deciding whether they actually enjoy it.

They leave something because the experience was not what they expected.

They become fascinated by an idea that appeared only briefly in another class.

They discover that the part of an activity they loved was not the part everyone assumed they loved.

That is not inconsistency.

That is development.

The admissions challenge is not to eliminate that development. It is to communicate it clearly.

Showing the thread matters more than forcing every activity into the new field

When students hear that an application should tell a story, they sometimes begin forcing connections that do not exist.

A STEM student applying to history may try to claim that every robotics competition was secretly preparation to become a historian.

A humanities student applying to engineering may suddenly describe every debate tournament as proof of a lifelong commitment to mechanical design.

Admissions readers can often feel when the connection is artificial.

The student does not need to pretend that every previous experience directly prepared them for the intended major.

The student needs to identify the honest role each important experience played.

Some experiences may have created the current interest.

Others may have developed transferable skills.

Some may have exposed the student to a problem that the new field could help address.

Others may have shown the student what they did not want.

That last category is often ignored.

Students assume that every experience in the application must be described as positive, transformative, and perfectly aligned with the final direction.

But life is often a process of elimination.

Sometimes the most valuable thing an activity teaches a student is:

I do not want to spend my life doing this.

That realization is still meaningful.

It narrows the possibilities.

It clarifies preferences.

It helps the student identify which parts of the experience felt energizing and which parts felt empty.

A student may dislike building the machine but become fascinated by researching the historical circumstances that caused the machine to be invented.

Another student may dislike writing interpretive essays but love the moment when historical records are converted into data that can be analyzed systematically.

The activity did not fail.

It helped the student distinguish between different ways of thinking.

A STEM student moving toward the humanities

Consider the student who spends several years in STEM clubs, competitions, and technical programs but ultimately wants to study history, philosophy, literature, political theory, anthropology, or another humanities discipline.

The student may initially believe the activities represent the wrong identity.

We would encourage the student to ask a different set of questions.

What originally attracted you to the STEM activities?

Was it the competition?

Was it the possibility of solving difficult problems?

Was it the structure?

Was it the teamwork?

Was it the prestige?

Was it simply the strongest opportunity offered by your school?

Did your friends join?

Did a teacher recognize a talent and encourage you?

There is no required answer.

The goal is to reconstruct the real beginning.

The student should then ask what happened after joining.

Perhaps the technical work itself was satisfying, but the student became increasingly curious about the human decisions surrounding it.

Maybe a robotics project created questions about automation and labor.

Maybe coding raised concerns about privacy, misinformation, surveillance, or bias.

Maybe a science competition involved an environmental problem that led the student toward environmental history or public policy.

Maybe the student enjoyed researching how discoveries emerged more than conducting the experiments.

Perhaps the student realized that scientific developments never occur in isolation. They develop within political systems, cultural beliefs, economic pressures, ethical debates, and historical circumstances.

That can become the thread.

The story is not:

“I participated in STEM activities, but now I randomly want to study history.”

The story may be:

“I entered technical spaces because I liked solving problems, but over time I became more interested in understanding who defined those problems, how societies responded to them, and why the same technologies produced different consequences in different periods.”

That is an intellectual evolution.

It does not reject the STEM experiences.

It explains what the student discovered through them.

What if the student simply did not enjoy STEM?

The answer does not always need to be complicated.

Sometimes a student participated in STEM activities because that was what ambitious students were expected to do.

Perhaps the student’s school emphasized engineering competitions.

Perhaps the family strongly encouraged medicine or computer science.

Perhaps the student was good at mathematics and assumed that being good at something meant it should become a career.

Perhaps the student joined several activities before understanding the difference between competence and genuine interest.

After participating, the student realized that the work did not feel personally meaningful.

That can also be part of the story.

The student does not need to insult the activity or describe years of involvement as wasted time.

Instead, the student can explain what the experience clarified.

For example:

“I learned that I enjoyed explaining why a technology mattered more than building it.”

“I was less interested in completing the experiment than in understanding the social assumptions behind the research question.”

“I liked the research phase, especially tracing how an idea developed, but I did not enjoy the technical implementation.”

“I realized that the questions keeping me awake were not about whether a system could be built, but whether it should be built and how similar choices had shaped societies before.”

These statements do not manufacture a direct alignment.

They show self-awareness.

Students are allowed to discover what they do not enjoy.

In fact, a student who can explain that discovery thoughtfully may appear more reflective than one who presents an artificially perfect trajectory.

A humanities student moving toward STEM

The inverse concern is equally common.

A student may have spent most of high school involved in debate, Model United Nations, student government, creative writing, journalism, history clubs, language study, theater, community advocacy, or other humanities-centered activities.

Then the student becomes interested in computer science, engineering, neuroscience, biology, statistics, environmental science, economics, or another quantitatively demanding field.

The student begins to worry that the application lacks the “correct” evidence.

There may be no robotics team.

No science fair.

No coding competition.

No research internship.

No engineering summer program.

The student fears that the intended STEM major will look unsupported.

Again, our first question would be:

How did the new interest develop?

Perhaps a journalism project on public health introduced the student to epidemiology.

Maybe debate research about artificial intelligence led to curiosity about how machine-learning systems actually work.

Perhaps community advocacy exposed a transportation, environmental, medical, or accessibility problem that could not be solved through awareness alone.

Maybe historical research required analyzing a large dataset, and the student became interested in building better computational tools.

A student interested in language may encounter natural-language processing.

A student interested in ethics may begin studying algorithmic bias.

A student involved in environmental advocacy may become curious about climate modeling, renewable-energy systems, or environmental engineering.

A student who enjoys political campaigns may become fascinated by polling methodology, statistics, and data science.

A student who writes about medicine may realize that the most compelling questions involve the biological mechanisms underneath the human stories.

In those cases, the humanities activities did not delay the STEM interest.

They may have produced it.

Humanities experience does not become useless when a student chooses STEM

Students moving toward STEM often assume that their earlier humanities experiences will be regarded as irrelevant.

That is rarely the right interpretation.

Humanities activities can demonstrate:

  • Communication

  • Ethical reasoning

  • Historical awareness

  • Interpretation

  • Argumentation

  • Cultural understanding

  • Close reading

  • Public speaking

  • Empathy

  • Narrative thinking

  • The ability to explain complicated ideas clearly

  • Awareness of how technical decisions affect people

These are not decorative skills.

They can shape the kind of scientist, engineer, physician, researcher, or technologist a student eventually becomes.

A future engineer who understands public communication may be better prepared to explain a design to communities affected by it.

A future computer scientist who has studied ethics may ask more thoughtful questions about privacy and bias.

A future physician who has spent years reading literature may be attentive to the way patients describe pain, fear, and uncertainty.

A future environmental scientist who understands political history may better recognize why technically sound solutions can still fail.

The application does not need to pretend that debate is laboratory research.

It can show that debate trained the student to challenge assumptions, evaluate evidence, and communicate conclusions—skills the student now wants to apply in a technical field.

What if the new interest emerged late?

Students often believe that an interest is valid only if it began in childhood.

They feel pressure to say:

“I have always loved history.”

“I have wanted to become an engineer for as long as I can remember.”

“I began coding when I was six.”

“I have been fascinated by medicine since kindergarten.”

Those statements may be true for some students.

They are not required.

A recent interest can be genuine.

The important question is what the student did after discovering it.

Did the student pursue the most relevant courses available?

Did the student read beyond class?

Did the student begin a project?

Did the student seek guidance from a teacher?

Did the student explore the field enough to understand what it involves?

Did the student reflect on how the interest relates to earlier experiences?

A student does not need ten years of history activities to apply as a history major.

A student does not need a childhood robotics story to express interest in engineering.

Colleges are admitting students into educational environments partly because students are still developing.

The student should not manufacture an early origin story when the honest story is more recent.

Mapping the progression: How did you arrive here?

We often encourage students facing this issue to create a personal timeline before writing any application essay.

This is not a résumé timeline.

It is a development timeline.

Begin with the earliest relevant experience and ask:

  1. What did I believe I wanted at the time?

  2. Why did I choose this activity or course?

  3. What did I expect it to be like?

  4. What did I actually enjoy?

  5. What frustrated or disappointed me?

  6. Which questions followed me afterward?

  7. What did I try next?

  8. What changed in my thinking?

  9. Which experience made the current interest feel real?

  10. What do I now want to investigate in college?

The answers may reveal connections that were not visible when the student looked only at activity labels.

For example, the timeline may show:

  • A student joined robotics because of an interest in building.

  • The student enjoyed researching previous designs more than assembling components.

  • That research led to curiosity about technological change.

  • A history course introduced the Industrial Revolution.

  • The student began noticing how inventions changed labor, cities, politics, and family life.

  • The student took every additional history course available.

  • The student now wants to study the history of technology.

The robotics activity does not conflict with the history interest.

It becomes part of the origin.

The reverse timeline could show:

  • A student joined debate because of an interest in public policy.

  • The student researched healthcare access.

  • The student became frustrated by the limits of argument without reliable evidence.

  • A statistics unit revealed how data could expose disparities.

  • The student learned basic programming to analyze a public dataset.

  • The technical process became as compelling as the original policy question.

  • The student now wants to study data science or biomedical engineering.

The debate activity does not conflict with STEM.

It explains why the student wants to use technical tools.

Every experience can play a role without becoming equally important

Connecting the dots does not mean discussing every activity in the application essay.

Some experiences are central.

Others provide background.

Some matter because they developed skills.

Others matter because they changed the student’s direction.

A few may matter because they ruled something out.

The student’s task is to identify the experiences that best explain the development.

That requires selection.

A college essay should not become a chronological list of every club, course, and competition.

Instead, the student might focus on two or three turning points.

For a STEM-to-humanities student, those turning points could include:

  • The first technical activity that exposed a human or historical question

  • A course or reading that gave language to the emerging interest

  • A later choice that confirmed the student wanted to pursue the humanities more deeply

For a humanities-to-STEM student, the turning points could include:

  • A social or human question that required technical investigation

  • The first experience using scientific or computational tools

  • A project or course that made the new direction feel intellectually serious

The thread should be visible without becoming overexplained.

What admissions readers are trying to understand

Admissions officers are not usually asking whether the student’s life has followed the ideal résumé template for a particular major.

They are trying to understand the student presented in the file.

They may ask:

  • Does the stated interest appear genuine?

  • Has the student pursued available opportunities?

  • Is there evidence of intellectual curiosity?

  • Can the student explain the progression?

  • Does the intended direction make sense in context?

  • What will the student contribute to the academic community?

  • Is the application honest about growth and uncertainty?

A student who changed direction can answer those questions well.

The change itself may reveal curiosity, openness, courage, and self-awareness.

It can demonstrate that the student did not continue pursuing a field merely because it looked impressive.

The student experimented, observed, reflected, and adjusted.

That is a meaningful intellectual process.

How the transcript can support the new direction

The transcript is an important source of evidence because it shows the student’s academic choices over time.

For the student who contacted us, completing every available history course helped establish that the interest was not merely an unsupported declaration.

A STEM-heavy activity list did not erase the academic choices.

Similarly, a humanities-focused student moving toward STEM should evaluate the relevant coursework.

Has the student taken the strongest available mathematics and science courses?

Has the student shown improvement?

Did the student add a relevant course after discovering the interest?

Are there limitations in the school’s offerings that provide context?

The transcript does not need to be perfectly specialized.

It should help the reader understand the preparation and progression.

How the activity list should be written

The student should not distort activities to make them fit the intended major.

A robotics activity should still be described as robotics.

Debate should still be described as debate.

Theater should not suddenly become evidence of engineering.

A science competition should not be rewritten as a humanities project.

The activity description should explain what the student actually did, contributed, created, led, learned, or accomplished.

The broader connection can appear through the full application.

Sometimes one activity description may naturally include an interdisciplinary element. That is appropriate when it is real.

For example, a coding project that analyzed historical documents can mention both components.

An environmental advocacy initiative that led the student to study water chemistry can show that evolution.

But the student should resist the temptation to insert the intended major into every line.

Coherence should emerge from the collective evidence.

It should not be imposed through repeated keywords.

How the essays can explain the transition

The essays may provide the best space to make the thread understandable.

The student does not necessarily need to write a defensive essay titled, “Why My Activities Do Not Match My Major.”

That approach can give the supposed mismatch more importance than it deserves.

Instead, the student can tell the story of an intellectual shift.

A strong essay may begin inside a specific moment:

  • The moment a technical project raised a historical question

  • The moment a historical problem required a scientific tool

  • The moment the student realized the favorite part of an activity was different from what others assumed

  • The moment the student admitted that a respected activity was not personally fulfilling

  • The moment two previously separate interests began to connect

The essay should then move beyond the moment.

What did the student think afterward?

What did the student explore?

What choices changed?

What does the student want to understand now?

The purpose is not to justify the résumé.

It is to reveal the mind behind it.

What we would not recommend

We would not recommend abandoning meaningful existing activities merely because they do not match the intended major.

We would not recommend joining several new clubs at the last minute solely to create cosmetic alignment.

We would not recommend inventing a lifelong passion.

We would not recommend pretending that every previous activity was secretly part of the current plan.

We would also not recommend describing an earlier field with contempt.

A student can say that an experience was not the right fit without dismissing the people who genuinely care about it.

The strongest reflection often sounds like:

“I valued what this experience taught me, but it clarified that I was drawn toward a different part of the problem.”

That is more mature than declaring the earlier field pointless.

What if there is still time before applications?

When there is meaningful time remaining, the student can continue exploring the new field.

The goal should not be to repair the application superficially.

The goal should be to test the interest.

A STEM-to-humanities student might pursue:

  • Independent reading around a specific historical question

  • Oral-history interviews

  • A local-history project

  • Archival exploration

  • A historical research paper

  • A museum, preservation, or public-history opportunity

  • A project connecting technology with history, ethics, politics, or culture

A humanities-to-STEM student might pursue:

  • An introductory programming project

  • Data analysis connected to an existing social question

  • A science or engineering course

  • Independent experimentation

  • A technical contribution to a community project

  • Research into the scientific mechanisms underlying an existing interest

  • A project combining communication with technical problem-solving

These should not be undertaken merely to create another line on the application.

They should help the student determine whether the new field remains compelling when explored more deeply.

Life is often a process of elimination

Students are often taught to tell stories of constant accumulation.

Every experience supposedly added a new passion.

Every activity supposedly confirmed the same goal.

Every obstacle supposedly made the student even more certain.

Real development is often less orderly.

We learn through addition, but also through subtraction.

We discover that we do not enjoy laboratory work.

We learn that we dislike competitive debate but love researching the evidence.

We realize that we enjoy writing code but not building consumer products.

We discover that we care about patients but do not want to practice medicine.

We find that we enjoy historical interpretation but want a more quantitative method.

We learn that we are talented at something that does not make us feel alive.

These discoveries are not empty spaces in the story.

They are part of the story.

A student may not know the correct direction until several incorrect directions have been tested.

That is how many adults make career decisions as well.

The goal of the application is not to conceal that process.

It is to show that the student paid attention to it.

Frequently asked questions

Do extracurricular activities have to match the intended college major?

No.

Activities can support an intended major, but colleges do not expect every commitment to belong to the same academic category. The application should make the student’s current interest understandable through coursework, experiences, essays, and intellectual exploration.

Can a student apply as a history major with mostly STEM activities?

Yes.

The student should preserve the STEM activities honestly and explain how the interest in history developed. Completing available history coursework, pursuing independent exploration, and articulating specific historical questions can help demonstrate authenticity.

Can a humanities student apply to engineering or computer science?

Yes.

The student should show the development of the technical interest and provide evidence of preparation where possible. Humanities activities may also demonstrate communication, ethical reasoning, interpretation, and awareness of the human consequences of technology.

Will changing interests make a student look indecisive?

Not necessarily.

A thoughtful change can demonstrate exploration and intellectual growth. The student should help the reader understand why the direction changed and what actions followed the discovery.

Should the student add major-related activities before applying?

Only when the opportunity is genuine and worthwhile.

A meaningful project can help the student explore the field. Several rushed activities added solely for appearances are unlikely to create a persuasive narrative.

What if an activity only taught the student what they disliked?

That can still be valuable.

The student can explain how the experience clarified preferences, eliminated one direction, or revealed that a different part of the work was more compelling.

Should the student explain the entire transition in the personal statement?

Not always.

The transition may fit naturally in the personal statement, a supplemental essay about academic interests, or several parts of the application. The student should use the space where the story is most relevant rather than forcing it into every response.

How can students connect unrelated activities without sounding artificial?

Focus on actual questions, skills, decisions, and turning points.

Do not claim every activity directly prepared you for the intended major. Explain the honest role it played in helping you arrive there.

Our final guidance to the student

Our advice to the student was not to hide the STEM activities.

Those experiences were part of the student’s actual high school life. They represented time, effort, exploration, and growth.

The student also did not need to prove that every STEM activity was secretly historical.

The application needed to show the thread.

Why did the student originally enter those spaces?

What was learned there?

Which parts were enjoyable?

Which parts were not?

What questions remained after the activity ended?

When did history begin to feel more compelling?

How did the student act on that interest?

Why does the student now want to study the subject more deeply?

The inverse student should follow the same process.

A humanities-focused applicant moving toward STEM should map how earlier experiences led to the technical interest, which human questions created the need for new tools, what the student explored afterward, and why the new direction now feels meaningful.

The strongest application is not always the one with the straightest path.

It is often the one in which the student can look back honestly and understand the path that was taken.

The student does not need to claim that everything happened according to a plan.

Most lives do not work that way.

An activity can matter because it inspired the student.

It can matter because it developed a skill.

It can matter because it exposed a problem.

It can matter because it introduced a person or idea.

It can even matter because the student discovered, with complete certainty, that the activity was not enjoyable and should not become the future.

Life is often a process of elimination.

College applications become more coherent when students stop trying to erase that truth and begin explaining what the process taught them.

The goal is not to make every dot identical.

The goal is to connect them clearly enough that the reader can see how the student arrived here—and why the next step makes sense.
