Reflecting on Early Decision Acceptance: Is the Commitment Right for You?

Written by Amanda, University of Pennsylvania

Getting accepted through Early Decision (ED) is a huge achievement. Congratulations! It means the college sees you as a great fit, and you’ve committed to attending if accepted. Now that you’re in, it’s time to think about what that commitment means and what steps to take next!

What Does Early Decision Mean?

When you apply ED, you’re making a serious promise. If you get in, you’re agreeing to: 1. Withdraw all other college applications

2. Commit to enrolling at that school

This is a binding agreement, so it’s important to make sure you’re ready to follow through!

Questions to Ask Yourself:

● Do I feel confident this college is the best fit for me academically, socially, and financially?

● Have I reviewed the financial aid package (if applicable) to make sure it works for my family?

● Am I okay with not considering other college options?

If your answer to these questions is “yes,” you’re all set to move forward with your ED acceptance!

Next Steps After Being Accepted

Once the excitement settles, it’s time to get ready for your college journey. Here’s what to do next:

1. Withdraw Other Applications:

Be sure to let the other colleges you applied to know you won’t be completing their application process. This is part of the ED agreement and shows you’re honoring your commitment!

2. Celebrate Your Achievement:

Getting accepted through ED is a huge deal! Share the good news with family and friends, and take a moment to feel proud of what you’ve accomplished.

3. Confirm Enrollment and Pay the Deposit:

Follow your college’s instructions to officially secure your spot. This might include submitting an enrollment deposit by a specific deadline.

4. Check Financial Aid and Scholarships:

If you’re receiving financial aid, make sure you understand the details. If anything feels confusing or doesn’t seem right, be sure to contact the financial aid office.

5. Start Preparing for College Life:

Look into housing options, research classes you’d potentially like to take and explore ways to connect with other students (Facebook groups/Instagram accounts of your respective class are usually the way to go!) The more you prepare now, the more confident you’ll feel when college starts!

What If You’re Having Second Thoughts?

It’s totally normal to feel a mix of emotions: excitement, relief, and even a little doubt. If those doubts keep coming up, it’s important to get to the bottom of what’s causing them!

Here’s What You Can Do:

Talk to Someone You Trust: Share your feelings with a parent, school counselor, or mentor. They can help you think through your concerns!

Remember Why You Applied ED: Reflect on why you chose to apply to this school in the first place. Are those reasons still important to you?

Contact the College: If financial concerns are the issue, reach out to the financial aid office to see if adjustments are possible.

Keep in mind: ED is binding unless there’s a major reason, such as financial hardship, that prevents you from attending. If you’re unsure, take action early to avoid last-minute stress!

What’s the Big Picture?

Early Decision is an amazing way to secure your spot at a school you love! It’s also a serious commitment, so by following through on your next steps, staying confident in your choice, and addressing any doubts quickly, you’re setting yourself up for success.

Your college journey has officially begun; congratulations again on this incredible milestone!
