01 / Separate outcome from evidence

An early decision can be painful without providing a useful explanation. You usually cannot reconstruct a committee's reasoning from a rejection notice. An essay you now dislike may deserve revision, but the decision alone does not prove that the essay caused the result. Start by writing two separate sentences: what happened, and what you can actually inspect.
For example: “I was not admitted” is an outcome. “My response spends most of its space praising the college and never explains my interests” is an observation about a document. “The committee disliked my personality” is a guess. Put guesses aside while working on applications you can still improve.
Keep an untouched copy of everything already submitted. Make a separate working copy for upcoming colleges, with clear filenames and dates. A postmortem should create a manageable revision plan, not erase the record or encourage you to send unsolicited replacements. Follow each institution's instructions for any permitted updates.
02 / Inspect broad language
Replace the label with something a reader can see.
Words such as leadership, resilience, passion, and growth are not forbidden. They become thin when they stand in for the experience they are supposed to explain. Highlight a sentence that announces a virtue. Then ask which action, conversation, or change in behavior could make that claim understandable without the label.
An illustrative draft might say, “Volunteering taught me the importance of listening.” The next draft could describe asking participants which meeting time worked, discovering that the original schedule excluded people, and helping revise it. The scene earns the interpretation. Use your own facts rather than borrowing this example as an experience.
The same test works for familiar journey metaphors and grand future promises. Keep an image if it helps the reader understand something specific; remove it if it only makes an ordinary sentence sound ceremonial. 03 / Inspect the topic
A familiar experience can still reveal an individual mind.
A sports injury, family responsibility, community project, or classroom discovery is not automatically a weak topic. The question is what your draft does with the experience. A predictable summary says that the event happened, it was difficult, and you became stronger. A more informative account explains a choice, a complication, and a changed understanding.
Try removing the event's headline. What remains that another participant could not tell in exactly the same way? Perhaps you noticed an overlooked detail, changed your role, or realized that your first interpretation was incomplete. Specificity comes from perspective and attention, not from finding a subject nobody has ever experienced.

04 / Inspect activity claims
Describe the work before deciding what shape it makes.
The original article warned against treating a long activity list as an automatic advantage. That is useful; claiming that every successful applicant must have one narrow specialty is not. There is no universal activity silhouette you must imitate.
Read each activity entry as a stranger would. Can the reader tell what you actually did, how consistently you participated, and what responsibility you carried? A school-specific response becomes generic when the college could be replaced by another name without changing the paragraph. Start with an academic or community question that matters to you. Then research how the institution might help you pursue it. Record the current official page, the opportunity, and the connection to something you have already explored.
Naming a course or professor is only the beginning. Explain what you would want to learn, why the approach interests you, or how it relates to a question you have encountered. Check whether an opportunity is available to undergraduates and whether it requires prerequisites or a separate application. Do not describe access as guaranteed.
If you cannot explain why a school belongs on your list, revisit the selection before rewriting the supplement. 06 / Inspect voice and boundaries
Keep ownership of the story, including what you leave private.
An essay can discuss hardship without turning suffering into an admissions performance. You decide what to disclose. Consider whether the details help a reader understand your context or whether they expose something you would rather keep private. You do not owe a dramatic recovery arc, a diagnosis, or intimate information about another person.
When context matters, describe it accurately and use the appropriate application space. Reflection can include uncertainty or ongoing learning; it does not require claiming that every difficulty made you grateful. The useful question is what a reader needs to understand, not how much emotion you can produce.
Read the draft aloud in a comfortable voice. Replace vocabulary you would never naturally use unless it is necessary and you understand it. 07 / Prioritize the repairs
Fix the part that changes understanding first.
Sort possible changes into three groups. First come accuracy and requirements: an incorrect college name, an unanswered prompt, a misleading role, or a missing required item. Next come meaning: a scene without reflection, a claim without evidence, or a paragraph that obscures your motivation. Sentence polish comes after those foundations.
A useful repair is small enough to perform and clear enough to verify. “Make it authentic” is difficult to act on. “Replace the opening list of traits with the actual conversation that changed my plan” gives you a task. Add a completion check: a reader can identify the conversation and explain why it mattered.
Before you revise, write a brief baseline note about what the current passage communicates. After revising, ask the same question again. This keeps a new version from feeling better merely because it is newer. You might discover that a vivid added detail is interesting but distracts from the prompt, or that a shorter sentence makes the meaning much easier to follow. Save both versions until you have compared them. A revision should earn its place by improving accuracy, understanding, or voice; it does not need to make every line more elaborate.

08 / Close the review
Submit a clearer application without promising yourself an outcome.
Compare the revised draft with the original using the prompt, not your anxiety, as the reference point. Does it answer the question? Are the facts accurate? Can a reader understand your choices and perspective? Is the college-specific material current and relevant? Does the voice still belong to you?
Ask one reader to summarize what they learned about you in two sentences. Their response can reveal whether your intended meaning arrived. You do not need unanimous agreement about every adjective, and repeatedly collecting new opinions can make the draft less coherent. Decide which feedback identifies a real problem and which reflects stylistic preference.
Then inspect the actual submission preview for formatting, paragraph breaks, limits, and attachments. Save the receipt or confirmation when you submit. A careful revision can improve what the application communicates; it cannot guarantee a result. The point of this review is to act responsibly on the evidence you have and finish work you can control.
