What Should a Sophomore Actually Be Doing for College Admissions?
“I have a 3.9, but I didn’t do much freshman year. I want a T20. What extracurriculars will admissions officers care about?”
Our first answer was the part the student least expected: you are not behind.
“What will admissions officers like?” sounds strategic. It can quietly produce a very weak strategy.
The student was already considering Python, engineering, reading, and volunteering at a library. None of those ideas was a problem. The risk was the reason behind them: assembling activities because each one seemed like something a selective college might approve of.
That approach often produces a résumé that is busy but hard to remember. Ten unrelated activities can prove that a student was active. They do not automatically explain what the student became interested in, what they built, whom they helped, or how their responsibility grew.
We told the student to use sophomore year as an exploration year—not as a frantic attempt to manufacture the final Common App activities list three years early.
For an engineering-minded student, “explore” can still be concrete.
If Python is genuinely interesting, learn it. If designing physical things is more exciting, try CAD or 3D modeling. If the student likes teams and competition, robotics may fit. If the best available opportunity is shelving books at a library, that can still matter—especially if the student enjoys the setting and eventually takes on more responsibility there.
The point is not to do all of these. The point is to run small experiments and pay attention to which ones create energy.
Choose an interest above. The goal is not to copy the path; it is to see how ordinary beginnings can become substantial through time.
The activity does not have to start impressive. It has to have somewhere to go.
A library shift can become mentoring younger readers, helping with a community program, creating a small maker workshop, or simply becoming the person trusted with more responsibility. A coding tutorial can become a tool the student uses for a real problem. A robotics meeting can become design ownership, competition work, mentoring, or technical leadership.
We care about the direction of travel: curiosity → skill → contribution → ownership. That progression is more useful than trying to find an activity with a prestigious label on day one.
The rising sophomore’s biggest advantage was not a special program. It was three years.
Students often underestimate how much can happen between the beginning of tenth grade and the fall of senior year. A new interest has time to become a real skill. A small responsibility has time to become leadership. A first project has time to fail, change, and become a stronger second project.
That is why we told this student we would rather see one or two interests discovered now and developed for years than ten “impressive-sounding” activities collected in a rush later.
The sophomore-year question is not:
“What can I add to my application?”It is:
“What is worth giving enough time to become part of who I am?” No single extracurricular guarantees admission. The goal is to build a life in high school that produces real interests, skills, relationships, responsibility, and stories worth telling later.
