SHORT ANSWER

Do not default to a full-year average. But do not automatically report the single most extreme week either. The most defensible reading is the hours you typically spend in a genuine, recurring busy period for that activity.

That is an interpretation of the wording—not a published Common App formula. Common App explicitly allows a best estimate, and current applicants are encountering genuine ambiguity in how to translate seasonal schedules into one number.

THE FALSE CHOICE

Average vs. busiest week is the wrong binary.

The phrase contains two instructions at once. “Busiest parts” points you away from a whole-year average. “Typically” points you away from a freak one-off maximum.

Imagine your activity as a year-long signal. The question is not “what was the highest point?” It is “what did this activity normally demand when it was truly busy?”

This is also why what counts as a meaningful extracurricular is broader than school clubs alone: jobs, caregiving, research, independent work, athletics, and online projects can all have very different seasonal rhythms.

RUN THE SEASONS

What should you enter for common seasonal activities?

Choose an activity. The calendar will show the difference between ordinary time, a real busy period, and an exceptional spike.

BUILD SEASON

Robotics: 6 hours normally, 20 during build season, 34 at one championship.

If 18–22 hours is normal across several build-season weeks, that range better matches “typically … during the busiest parts” than either a 9-hour annual average or a single 34-hour championship week.

LIKELY APPROACH ≈ 20 hrs/week Use the recurring build-season pattern; keep the one-off championship spike in context.

Hours establish scale; they do not establish meaning. The stronger activities list still needs to show what changed because you were there, not simply how long you were there.

“But if I put 30–60 hours, won’t it look fake?”

Not automatically. A summer job can genuinely be 40 hours a week. Band camp can genuinely occupy most of a day. A tournament trip can consume a weekend. The credibility problem begins when the numbers imply schedules that cannot plausibly coexist.

Robotics may peak in February, tennis in April, research in July, and a job during winter break. The new wording can make the sum of all listed “hours/week” look impossible even when each individual peak is true.

The goal is a coherent application, not a time-sheet competition. That same principle sits behind Application Identity™: every data point should help the reader understand one real student rather than manufacture a busier-looking résumé.

THE SECOND BOX

What about “weeks spent per year”?

This is where students are most likely to accidentally create a misleading picture. The hours prompt explicitly refers to the busy part of the year. The separate weeks field asks how many weeks you spent on the activity.

Do not erase quieter weeks simply because the hours box is describing the busier stretch.

Important: that pairing should not be read as “35 × 46 = 1,610 hours.” The hours field is now framed around the busy period, so multiplying the two fields can manufacture a total the student never claimed. When the contrast is large enough to confuse a reader, use a few characters in the description to show the seasonality.

CLARITY BUILDER

When the number cannot tell the whole truth, let six words do the work.

You usually do not need a paragraph explaining your hours. A compact phrase can prevent a seasonal activity from being misread.

Do not spend the 150-character activity description defending every estimate if that space is better used for impact. Before you submit the number, make sure you can defend the story behind it.

The Common App says a best guess is okay. “Best guess” does not mean careless guess; it means an honest estimate from imperfect records.

Report the typical peak, not the mathematical average and not the record high.

For a seasonal activity, ask: “During the stretch when this activity was genuinely at its busiest, what did a normal week look like?” That is the number the current wording most naturally asks you to estimate.

Public Common App resources confirm that the Activities section is designed to communicate meaningful experiences and allows additional context, but Common App has not published a public mathematical formula for converting variable schedules into this field.
