A practice score is an observation

A score can tell you where you are. The work behind the next score begins when you identify why an answer went wrong, choose a focused repair, and test whether that repair holds without help.

The original guide by Brandon, Brown University, connects choosing a test, building a study routine, and managing score reporting. This expanded guide keeps that whole-process approach while using the current SAT and enhanced ACT structures. Instead of collecting preparation tips, you will follow one learning cycle: observe, diagnose, repair, rehearse, and decide.

Testing is one part of an application. The right amount of preparation depends on your college list, available time, access needs, and other commitments. No practice schedule guarantees a score or an admission result. A useful plan makes your next action clear and gives you evidence for deciding whether to continue it.

Read the instrument before taking a measurement

Practice in the format you will actually encounter.

The SAT has Reading and Writing and Math sections. Standard testing time is 134 minutes, excluding the break, with 98 questions in total. Each section has two modules; performance in the first affects the difficulty mix in the second. The current format is described in College Board’s SAT structure guide. Do not use an old paper-test timing chart as your rehearsal plan.

The enhanced ACT’s core consists of English, Math, and Reading: 131 questions over 125 standard testing minutes. Science and Writing are optional additions, each adding 40 testing minutes. ACT’s current test overview lists the individual sections. Breaks, administration procedures, and approved accommodations affect total time at the center.

For the current enhanced ACT, the Composite uses English, Math, and Reading. Science remains separately reportable and may matter to a college or program. “Optional” on the registration form does not settle every institution’s requirement. Check the policies for your application cycle and intended programs before deciding which components to take.

On the SAT, a calculator is allowed throughout Math; there is no separate no-calculator section. Practice with the built-in Bluebook calculator or an approved handheld model, and check the current calculator policy before test day. Familiarity with a tool helps, but understanding the problem still determines whether you use it well.

Choose a baseline that answers a real question

The first run establishes a starting point, not an identity.

Take a current official practice test in conditions that resemble your planned administration. Use the appropriate device or paper format, the assigned timing, and any accommodations you expect to have approved. An interruption-filled practice session may still help you learn, but it is not directly comparable to a quiet timed baseline. Label the conditions so you remember what the result represents.

If you are still deciding between exams, sample each before investing heavily in both. Compare performance using an official concordance resource where appropriate, along with pacing, access, and the kinds of mistakes you make. Record more than the total. Note where you guessed, where the clock changed your strategy, and which answers you got right for uncertain reasons. Those uncertain successes matter because they may not repeat. Mark an answer you solved confidently but incorrectly for especially careful review: it may reveal a misconception rather than a pacing problem.

Choose a provisional focus test and review it after a defined amount of preparation. You do not need to turn the first practice score into a permanent verdict. The purpose of a baseline is to create a useful experiment, not to label yourself a strong or weak student.

Open the error instead of filing it away

Name the cause before choosing the repair.

Build an error record with four entries: the skill, the point where your reasoning changed direction, the correct explanation, and the next practice action. Copying an answer explanation is insufficient if you cannot explain why your own approach failed. Work through the original problem again without looking, then describe the decision you will make differently on a new problem.

Use a small set of causes. A knowledge gap means you need to learn a concept or rule. A setup error means you understood the concept but translated the question incorrectly. A reading error means you missed a qualifier, relationship, or requested unit. A pacing error means time pressure disrupted a process you can otherwise complete. Some questions involve more than one cause.

Suppose you solved for a radius when the question asked for a diameter. Another hour of advanced algebra will not address that error. Your repair might be to underline the requested quantity, label your intermediate result, and check the unit before choosing an answer. If you did not know how a circle’s measurements relate, the repair needs concept instruction first.

Review correct answers too. A lucky guess can conceal a gap, and a correct but very slow solution can identify a more efficient method to learn. The practice workshop offers another way to turn error patterns into a manageable preparation cycle.

Give one repair enough room to work

Short, deliberate sessions need a specific job.

Choose one or two recurring weaknesses for the next week. Write them as actions: distinguish evidence from inference in a reading question, translate a rate into an equation, or identify the clause a punctuation choice connects. “Get better at Math” is too broad to guide a session. A narrower target tells you what material to choose and how to recognize improvement.

Start with untimed learning when the concept is unfamiliar. Read an explanation, work an example, and solve a similar problem independently. Then introduce a short timed set. Moving directly to speed can reinforce an unreliable method; staying untimed forever can leave pacing untested. The sequence should fit the cause you identified in your error record.

Use official preparation resources as a foundation. College Board provides Bluebook practice tests and a student question bank; ACT provides official practice materials through its test preparation pages. Check that any additional resource matches the format you registered for. A large quantity of outdated questions can be less useful than a smaller set you review carefully.

The planner below divides your available minutes into learning, independent practice, and review. Its suggested allocation is a planning aid, not a proven optimum for every student. Adjust it after observing where your work stalls. Rehearse the decisions the clock will require

Pacing is a practiced sequence, not constant urgency.

A timed rehearsal should test your process as well as your knowledge. Decide how you will recognize a question that is consuming too much time, how you will mark it within the available interface, and when you will return. On the SAT, work within the current module; do not build a strategy that depends on returning to an earlier completed module.

Read instructions and answer-entry requirements carefully. A multiple-choice elimination strategy differs from entering a mathematical response. When you cannot fully solve a question, use the information you have and avoid leaving answers blank merely because you are uncertain. Practice these decisions under the provider’s actual rules rather than relying on a generic test-taking slogan.

For Reading and Writing, connect each answer to the words or relationship in the question. For Math, estimate whether the size and sign of your answer make sense. For optional ACT Science, practice interpreting data and experimental information while reviewing the background knowledge the official content description identifies. It is misleading to promise that the section requires no scientific understanding at all.

Protect sleep, meals, and schoolwork around rehearsals. A plan that repeatedly exhausts you may produce less useful evidence and interfere with other responsibilities. Our academic engagement guide reinforces the importance of keeping preparation inside a sustainable student schedule.

Check the equipment and the route

Logistics belong in preparation, before the final evening.

Confirm your test center, arrival instructions, identification requirements, registration details, and permitted equipment through the test provider. Complete any required app setup or readiness check within the stated window. If you are borrowing a device or testing with school-provided equipment, learn who is responsible for arranging it and what you must do before arrival.

Request accommodations through the appropriate process early enough for review; do not assume school accommodations automatically transfer to an admissions test. International students should also check available local dates, centers, and administration formats directly. A claim that one test is always easier to access worldwide is not a substitute for confirming the options near you.

English proficiency requirements are a separate policy question. A college may require, waive, or accept alternatives to an English proficiency test depending on the applicant’s circumstances. Taking the SAT or ACT does not automatically settle that requirement. Keep a source link and a checked date beside each institution’s instructions.

Before registering for another attempt, compare its cost and timing with the benefit you are trying to pursue. Include transport, preparation time, and the possibility that scores may not reach a college by its accepted deadline. Discuss practical constraints openly. Let the next measurement change the plan

A retake needs a reason, and reporting needs a policy check.

After a test, return to the questions your preparation was meant to answer. Did your targeted skills improve? Did pacing hold? Did the testing conditions differ significantly from practice? A single total can move for several reasons. Look for a pattern across comparable practice and official results before deciding that a strategy has succeeded or failed.

Use a college’s published score ranges as context, not an admission threshold or promise. Confirm whose scores the range represents and whether it comes from admitted or enrolled students. Testing policies differ across institutions, programs, and cycles. Required, optional, flexible, and not-considered policies call for different actions, and scholarship rules may need a separate check.

Score selection and superscoring are not universal permissions to send anything you choose. Read each college’s requirements for which tests to report, whether self-reporting is accepted, how official reports must arrive, and how results from different dates are considered. ACT’s score explanation describes its scoring system; the college determines how it uses the information.

A retake is most useful when you can name a specific improvement plan and still meet the relevant deadlines. It is also reasonable to stop when additional preparation would displace more important work. If the decision remains unclear, bring your testing record and college list to a planning conversation. Evidence should determine your next step.
