What to Do After Submitting Your UC Applications: A Step-by-Step Guide

Written by Amanda, University of Pennsylvania

Congratulations! Hitting "submit" on your University of California (UC) applications is a huge milestone. You’ve put in the hard work, written your essays, and showcased everything that makes you a great candidate. Now that your application is out of your hands, here’s a guide to help you navigate what to expect next and how to make the most of the waiting period!

Step 1: Check for Confirmation Emails and Log In to Your UC Portal

After submitting, you’ll receive a confirmation email from the UC system with details on accessing your UC Application Portal. This is the main place where you’ll receive updates on your application status.

Save the Email: Place this confirmation email in a special folder or label it for easy access.

Log in Regularly: The UC portal is where you’ll find notifications about missing documents, requests for more information, or next steps. Checking weekly is a good habit!

Set Reminders: Schedule a weekly reminder to check your portal so you don’t miss any important updates!

Step 2: Make Sure All Required Documents Are Submitted

Double-check that you’ve sent everything UC needs, such as transcripts or test scores (if you chose to include them). Missing items can delay your application, so take a few minutes to confirm!

Verify Test Scores: UC schools don’t require SAT or ACT scores, but if you’ve already submitted them, check that they’ve been received.

Send Updated Transcripts: If a campus requests updated transcripts, especially after your fall semester, make sure your school sends them as soon as possible.

Keep a Document Checklist: Create a checklist of all required documents and deadlines to stay organized and ensure nothing is overlooked.

Step 3: Watch for Requests for Extra Information

Occasionally, UC campuses such as UC Berkeley may request extra details from some applicants. These could be short answers, additional documents, or even a mini-interview.

Respond ASAP: If you get a request(s) for documents, an interview, etc., complete it promptly (sending a response within 24 hours is a good rule of thumb!) Think of it as an extra chance to showcase who you are and why you’re a great fit.

Be Professional: Treat these responses seriously and make them reflect your best self. They could play an important role in your application!

Follow-Up: If you haven’t received confirmation that your additional information was received, it’s okay to follow up. This shows your commitment and ensures nothing falls through the cracks!

Step 4: Keep Up with Schoolwork

Though you are a significant step closer to graduation, senior-year grades are still important! UC schools require a final transcript if you’re accepted, so staying focused on academics can help keep your acceptance secure.

Avoiding Senioritis: It can be tempting to fully relax during your senior year, but a drop in grades can impact your admission. If you’re struggling to stay motivated, talk to friends who might feel the same, or reach out to teachers, counselors, or trusted mentors for advice and encouragement!

Ask for Help if Needed: If you’re finding any classes challenging, seek help early! Connect with teachers, tutors, or study groups for support. These proactive steps can boost your confidence and help you stay on track for securing your spot at a UC school. Your effort now can make a significant difference!

Create a Study Schedule: Establish a study routine that allows you to balance schoolwork, college applications, and personal time. This can help you stay organized and reduce stress as you manage your responsibilities!

Step 5: Apply for Scholarships and Financial Aid

The cost of college is a huge consideration, so now’s a good time to start exploring funding options. Applying for aid and scholarships can make a massive difference in covering costs!

Submit FAFSA: Make sure to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the priority deadline to access the maximum financial aid.

Look for Additional Scholarships: Many local organizations, companies, and online scholarship sites offer awards that could help with UC tuition. It’s worth the time to apply!

Keep Track of Deadlines: Create a calendar or checklist of scholarship and financial aid deadlines to ensure you don’t miss any opportunities for funding!

Step 6: Take Care of Yourself and Stay Busy

Waiting can feel long and nerve-wracking, so it’s important to keep yourself engaged in activities you enjoy!

Set Personal Goals: Try something new, start a personal project, or volunteer for something meaningful. This can give you something positive to focus on.

Get a Part-Time Job if You’re Able: Working can help you earn money for college and build valuable professional and interpersonal skills. Even a few hours a week can make a difference!

Stay Active in Extracurricular Activities: Keep up with clubs, sports, or other activities that interest you. Staying involved not only adds balance to your schedule but also helps you stay connected and engaged during the waiting period!

Step 7: Mark Admission Decision Dates on Your Calendar

UC schools typically release admissions decisions in March, though each campus follows its own timeline. Research decision dates and set reminders!

Be Patient and Stay Grounded: Some decisions are released all at once, while others come out over a few days. Try to stay calm and remember that it’s okay if you don’t hear back immediately.

Reflect on What’s Important to You in a School: Once decisions come in, you’ll have choices to make. Consider factors such as campus size, location, programs, and costs that matter most to you.

Discuss Your Options: Talk with family and/or mentors about your options after you receive your admission decisions. Getting different perspectives can help you make a more informed choice about where to attend!

Step 8: Be Prepared for Waitlists or Appeals

If you’re waitlisted at a UC campus, it means they’re still considering you! Follow each school’s instructions to stay on the waitlist.

Accept the Waitlist Spot if You’re Interested: This shows the school that you’re genuinely interested and willing to wait for an opening.

Consider an Appeal if You Have New Information: While UC schools generally don’t encourage appeals, you can submit one if there’s new, important info that strengthens your application.

Research More Options: While waiting, explore other colleges or universities where you may also be interested in applying or attending. Having a backup plan can help ease any uncertainty during the waitlist process!

Step 9: Plan Campus Visits (If Possible)

If you’re accepted to one or more campuses, visiting in person (or virtually) can help you decide which is the best fit.

Explore Virtual Tours: Many UC campuses offer online tours that let you explore facilities, dorms, and key campus spots.

Visit in Person if You Can: Seeing the campus firsthand is a great way to imagine yourself there, meet students, and get a feel for the school’s vibe.

Attend Information Sessions: Look for information sessions or open houses at the campus (or campuses) you’re interested in, either during your visit or online. These events will offer valuable insights into academic programs, campus resources, and student life!

Step 10: Celebrate Your Accomplishment!

No matter what, you’ve done the hard work, and that deserves a celebration! Take a moment to appreciate this milestone with friends, family, and those who supported you along the way.
